PBC on NBC Sports Quick Picks

Gabriel Bracero vs. Danny O'Connor: The main event of Saturday's PBC card on NBC Sports will be a rematch between Gabriel Bracero (23-2, 4 KO) and Danny O'Connor (26-2, 10 KO).  The two men first fought in 2011 in an eight round bout that O'Connor won by the way of unanimous decision, and the scores were not close.  At the end of the fight the judges turned in scores of 80-72, 79-73, and 80-72.  In his last fight Bracero lost to an undefeated prospect and was dropped twice.  Meanwhile, O'Connor has scored three knockouts in a row following a 2013 loss to Vivian Harris.  Bracero is an orthodox fighter with very little power.  Bracero is a compact fighter with a good straight right hand and he likes to counter with his jab.  He will also throw a left hook but it doesn't do much damage and he often throws punches without much on them because he is moving backwards.  As for O'Connor he is a southpaw and fights out of Massachusetts, a perfect place for a guy named O'Connor.  He has a good stiff jab and his hands are slightly faster than Bracero's.  Along with that jab O'Connor shows a solid straight left hand that can do damage when he bangs it to the body.  Attacking the body is something O'Connor does very well and his best punch is his right hook, although he has scored recent stoppages with his left hand.  Neither fighter has ever been knocked out and don't expect to see it happen on Saturday.  Even though O'Connor has scored three knockouts in a row he won't stop Bracero early.  What O'Connor will do is dominate this fight on his way to another wide unanimous decision victory over Bracero.

Jonathan Guzman vs. Danny Aquino: Saturday's co-feature could end up being a very quick fight.  It is scheduled to go 10 rounds in the junior featherweight division but may not end up making it to the final bell.  The reason for that is Jonathan Guzman (19-0, 19 KO).  Guzman has been a killer so far in his career and that could be very bad news for Danny Aquino (17-2, 10 KO) who recently lost to a 13-8-2 fighter and was dropped twice only two fights ago by a 4-9-2 fighter.  While Guzman hasn't faced any elite fighter yet the Dominican Republic native is only 26 years old and he is being brought along at a nice pace.  Aquino hasn't faced any top talent either and he hasn't looked great against a lot of the sub par opponents he has faced.  Guzman is an orthodox fighter and he likes to stay patient and work his jab.  His best punch is his strong left hook but his right hand can do plenty of damage as well.  For a young prospect Guzman does a nice job of attacking the body and his left hook downstairs has ended many fights.  Aquino is also an orthodox fighter but he lacks the power that Guzman has.  Aquino also lacks the patience that Guzman has and usually charges straight ahead.  He does have a nice jab and a strong straight right hand but at times he will lunge forward with his punches and leave himself open for return fire.  Aquino should find some success in the early rounds if for nothing more than his high work rate.  However, Guzman is a big puncher and his patient style should allow him to weather an early storm and then stop Aquino in the 5th round.
