PBC on NBC Quick Picks

Peterson had a razor thin decision loss to Garcia
Lamont Peterson vs. Felix Diaz: Before Saturday's big pay-per-view event there will be some afternoon boxing courtesy the PBC on NBC.  The main event of that card is one that features fighters in very different places in their careers.  Lamont Peterson (33-3-1, 17 KO) will be taking on Felix Diaz (17-0, 8 KO) in a bout that is scheduled to go 12 rounds in the welterweight division.  Peterson has been near the top for awhile and even though they are the same age Diaz has yet to fight any top talent.  While Peterson has been fighting professionally since 2004 Diaz has only been a pro since 2009 after winning an Olympic gold medal in 2008.  This will be a dangerous fight for Peterson whose last fight was a loss to Danny Garcia.  He is taking on a worthy opponent but one without any name recognition so a loss would really hurt.  Peterson looked good in the second half of the Garcia fight but he started off woefully slow and gave many of the early rounds away.  Peterson is an orthodox fighter and he likes to control the action by using his jab.  With that jab Peterson also flashes a good straight right hand and a quality left hook.  He will sometimes throw the right hand overhand and when he does that the punch carries more power than when he throws it straight.  Defensively Peterson is good not great and he has a habit of waiting for his opponent to finish punching before he mounts an attack of his own.  Diaz is a southpaw and he will be giving up 4-inches in height to Peterson.  He has a confident style and often keeps both hands very low.  Diaz has quick hands and he likes to work his jab and counter with his straight left hand.  That big height advantage for Peterson will be the difference in this fight.  Peterson has had some tough losses in recent years but he will control this fight with his jab and box nicely from the outside on his way to a unanimous decision win.

Prichard Colon vs. Terrell Williams: Saturday afternoon's co-feature will have two undefeated fighters in action when Prichard Colon (16-0, 13 KO) takes on Terrell Williams (14-0, 12 KO).  The fight is scheduled to go 10 rounds in the welterweight division and someone's "0" must go.  The fighter to really pay attention to in this fight is Colon, he is only 23 years old and he is being brought along at a nice pace.  His last fight came against veteran Vivian Harris and while Harris is well passed his prime Colon looked good scoring a 4th round knockout.  Williams fights out of Los Angeles and he is really a club fighter.  While he turned pro in 2008 he didn't fight at all in 2010 or 2014.  On top of that Williams has only fought outside of California once and that fight was in nearby Arizona.  Unlike Colon who at least has a recognizable name on his resume Williams has never faced a notable opponent.  Colon is an orthodox fighter with a quick, accurate jab.  Also, at 6-feet tall he has very good size for a welterweight and uses that length well.  Along with that jab Colon has also shown a strong straight right hand and while his left hook is dangerous it is the right hand opponents really need to be weary of.  Unfortunately for Colon his size won't help him against Williams who also stands at 6-feet tall.  Williams has a good jab and moves well in the ring and he likes to fire off a stiff straight right hand.  Williams also has a strong left hook in his arsenal but the problem for him in this fight is that whatever he does well Colon seems to do better.  This should be a fun fight because fans will see Colon up against a similar fighter with a chance to pull off the upset.  That upset won't come though and Colon will win this fight by the way of unanimous decision.
