Weekend Wrap-Up

  • The biggest story from last weekend is, of course, Floyd Mayweather.  Mayweather was looking to go 49-0 for his career in a fight against Andre Berto, one the pound-for-pound king said would be his last.  The fight was never in question as Mayweather consistently made Berto miss and touched him up with jabs, straight right hands, and left hooks.  Mayweather also mixed in plenty of uppercuts and was much more offensively minded in this fight than in previous bouts.  In all Mayweather was able to buzz Berto a few times and seemed to hurt him in the final round.  All three judges scorecards had the fight for Mayweather who if he does actually stay retired will have tied Rocky Marciano's 49-0 mark.

  • Saturday's Showtime PPV turned out to be a great card.  Things started off on the pre-show when Vanes Martirosyan outpointed Ishe Smith to get a decision win in a close fight.  Then, when the PPV card kicked off Jhonny Gonzalez and Jonathan Oquendo gave fans a good show and both fighters tasted the canvas.  When the scores were read the fight went to Oquendo via majority decision.  The fight before the co-feature was an intriguing bout between Badou Jack and George Groves.  Jack dropped Groves in the very first round and had him badly hurt, but luckily for Groves there wasn't much time left and he was able to finish the round on his feet.  Jack then when on to put in a lot of good work to the body of Groves who kept the fight close but ended up losing a split decision to Jack.  Finally, when the co-feature rolled around it was time for the rematch between Roman "Rocky" Martinez and Orlando Salido.  Martinez dropped Salido twice in their first fight and won by the way of unanimous decision.  In the rematch Salido was much sharper and put in some tremendous work on the inside.  Most people had Salido ahead but when the scores were read it was ruled a split draw.  While the draw was surprising, it wasn't a horrendous decision and could set up a third fight between the two, something boxing heads would welcome.

  • Saturday also had fighters in action when the PBC returned to NBC.  The opening bout of that card saw young prospect Jermall Charlo faced off against tested veteran Cornelius "K9" Bundrage.  Bundrage was supposed to be a tough challenge for Charlo but Charlo proved he is a legit contender by dropping Bundrage four times, once in each of the 1st and 2nd rounds and then twice in the 3rd round.  The fight ended in the 3rd round after Bundrage was dropped by a looping right hand and the referee waved the fight off.  The main event of that card was also a massacre when Peter Quillin took on Michael Zerafa and didn't take long to finish him off.  In the 5th round with Zerafa on the ropes Quillin unloaded a brutal straight right hand that sent Zerafa to the canvas and knocked him out cold.  Zerafa had to be taken out of the arena on a stretcher and was brought to a local hospital.  Luckily Zerafa was okay and even talked to Quillin over the phone later that night.  Quillin was visibly shaken during a post-fight interview but it was a beautiful knockout that is a top contender for the 2015 Knockout of the Year.

  • On Friday night cable network truTV put on a card featuring two top prospects in seperate fights.  The first fight had prospect Jesse Hart taking on Aaron Pryor Jr. and the fight was never close.  Hart dominated all of the action and the fight was mercifully stopped in the 9th round before Pryor got seriously hurt.  Then in the main event top prospect Oscar Valdez took on Chris Avalos, a fighter who was supposed to provide Valdez with a tough test.  Instead Valdez dropped Avalos in the 3rd round and never let up.  In the 5th round the legs of Avalos looked horrible and he wobbled with every punch Valdez landed.  Valdez connected with a left hook and before he could follow up with more punches the referee stepped in a stopped the fight, saving Avalos from a brutal beating.

    • Also on Friday the PBC came to Spike TV and put on a card it probably shouldn't have.  The reason for that was the horrible main event where the lineal light heavyweight champion of the world, Adonis Stevenson, defended his belt against Tommy Karpency, a fighter whose biggest win was a razor thing decision against a totally done Chad Dawson.  Besides that fight every fighter anywhere near the top that Karpency had faced he lost to.  Not surprisingly Stevenson stopped Karpency in the 3rd round of a fight that no one wanted to see.  In the opening bout top prospect and rising star Errol Spence Jr. took on Chris van Heerden who was supposed to be a tough test.  Instead Heerden was another victim of the talented Spence who dropped Heerden twice in the 7th round before stopping him in the 8th to remain undefeated.

    • The week's earliest action came on Tuesday when Austin Trout headlined a PBC card on Fox Sports 1.  Trout took on Joey Hernandez who didn't look like he was in the best shape and Trout took advantage.  Trout put in good body work throughout the fight and finished Hernandez with a body shot in the 6th round.  Trout looked good and should be able to get another big name fight soon.
