TruTV Quick Picks

Oscar Valdez vs. Chris Avalos: When Floyd Mayweather fights it tends to take over the boxing world.  However, when he fights what also happens is that a lot of other cards start popping up around the same date.  While many of the casual fans might overlook those cards, they are something that boxing heads cherish.  This Friday on TruTV one of those cards has popped up and it features an exciting main event with two young pugilists looking to make a statement.  The fighter with the higher ceiling is Oscar Valdez (16-0, 14 KO), a heavy hitting Mexican who is only 24 years old.  His opponent for Friday's 10-round featherweight fight will be Chris Avalos (26-3, 19 KO) who is only 25 years old himself.  While Valdez has yet to be tested by any top fighters, Avalos has been in with Carl Frampton who is an A-level fighter who handed Avalos his first knockout loss.  Giving opponents knockout losses is something that Valdez is very familiar with.  Valdez is an orthodox fighter with a decent jab and a monster overhand right that he will swing wildly.  Along with that overhand right Valdez also has a very good left hook and he can fight well from the pocket or the outside.  For a young fighter Valdez does a nice jab of banging to the body, especially with his left hook.  However, he needs to work on shortening up his punches and not throwing them so wide.  Avalos is also an orthodox fighter and he has somewhat of a herky-jerky style and will often pump his jab seemingly at nothing.  One thing Avalos does do well is land his left hook downstairs and his counter right hand is also a nice weapon.  The problem for Avalos is that his footwork isn't great and he also takes a lot of clean punches upstairs.  Often times he can eat those clean punches from lesser fighter but he probably won't be able to walk through the fire that Valdez will be throwing his way.  This fight will be close for awhile with each fighter feeling the other out and looking to set something up.  However, later in the fight the power of Valdez will really start to take a toll on Avalos and Valdez will win the fight via 7th round stoppage.

Jesse Hart vs. Aaron Pryor Jr.: The co-feature for Friday's TruTV card will have two fighters in action who are at vastly different places in their respective careers.  The fight is scheduled to go 10 rounds in the super middleweight division and it will have hot prospect Jesse Hart (17-0, 14 KO) going up against faded veteran Aaron Pryor Jr. (19-8-1, 12 KO).  Hart is a fighter on the rise, at only 26 years old he is just now starting to climb the ranks on his way to becoming a contender.  Meanwhile, Pryor is a fighter simply looking to hold on and at 37 years old he is 4-5-1 in his past 10 fights and he is coming off of a draw to a 17-13-2 fighter and a loss to a 13-0 fighter.  What Pryor does bring to the ring is experience against top quality fighters and he has taken on the likes of Edwin Rodriguez and Adonis Stevenson among a few others.  That experience is something Hart hasn't had yet but this fight against Pryor should really be a measuring stick fight for him.  Hart is a talented orthodox fighter who flashes a nice jab and an even better short left hook.  The young prospect also has a straight right hand although it isn't a great punch yet.  Hart does love to rip punches to the body, especially his left hook and crooked right hand and he can also land solid uppercuts on the inside.  The veteran Pryor also fights out of the orthodox stance and he has some power himself.  Pryor has long arms and they enable him to land his jab from the outside successfully.  Pryor will also throw an overhand right and a straight right, the latter being the better of the two, but he doesn't have very fast hands.  In Pryor's last bout he was forced to retire by a young, undefeated fighter with good power.  The bad news for Pryor is that Hart can be described in the exact same way.  Some more bad news for Pryor is that this fight will probably end similarly to his last one and Hart will win this fight by the way of 6th round stoppage.
