Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Without a doubt the highlight of this past weekend was the fight between Krzysztof Glowacki and Marco Huck.  Huck was the favorite coming in and looking to set the record for most title defenses in the history of the cruiserweight division.  In the 6th round Huck caught Glowacki with a beautiful left hook that floored the Polish fighter and looked like it would end the fight.  The knockdown devastating and Glowacki was in rough shape when he made it to his feet.  However, referee David Fields was the man of the hour and didn't stop the fight when many other referee's would have.  After that knockdown Huck took control and looked like he could cruise to a historic victory.  That didn't happen though.  In the 11th round Huck got caught going straight back with his hands down and paid the price.  Glowacki caught him with two heavy punches that dropped Huck.  Huck made it to his feet but was clearly out of it and Glowacki was able to follow up and finish him off to score the upset win.  The fight is now in the running for 2015 Fight of the Year, Knockout of the Year, and Round of the Year.

  • The main event of that card was a fight that could have been sponsored by the AARP, because both fighters were very old.  Those fighter were Steve Cunningham and Antonio Tarver.  The fight wasn't exceptional and it was a battle of the high work rate of Cunningham against the power of Tarver.  Neither fighter ever really took control and by the end of the fight Cunningham's face looked beat up and Tarver looked incredibly winded.  When the scores were announced the fight was ruled a draw, which is always disappointing but in this case was probably a good call.

  • On Saturday night Lucian Bute returned to action after a long layoff.  Bute took on the severely outmatched Andrea Di Luisa and things did not go very well for Di Luisa.  Bute started off a little slow, which was to be expected after his layoff but he turned it up in the 4th round and was easily able to get the stoppage win in a fight that was never really in question.  Also on that card was a bout between the undefeated Eleider Alvarez and Isidro Ranoni Prieto.  It was a fight that saw Alvarez play the role of boxer while Prieto tried to swing for the fences.  Like it usually happens, the boxer came out on top and Alvarez was able to keep his perfect record intact.
