Weekend Wrap-Up

  • It wasn't a very busy weekend of boxing but it was a pretty entertaining one.  The biggest fights of the weekend came on Saturday night and Danny Garcia was the biggest name in action.  Garcia who had just moved up to the welterweight division took on veteran Paulie Malignaggi on a PBC cand on ESPN.  Garcia won the fight in the 9th round when the referee stopped the fight with Malignaggi bleeding badly and taking a lot of punishment.  Despite the win Garcia didn't look overly impressive and hasn't really impressed at a high level since his win over Lucas Matthysse.  After the fight Malignaggi all but said that he will be retiring.  That is probably a smart move considering Malignaggi wasn't the fighter he once was and that he has a great job as an analyst on Showtime.

  •  The other PBC fight on ESPN started off with a bang.  Daniel Jacobs was in the ring with Sergio Mora and both fighters were down in the very 1st round.  First Jacobs dropped Mora and then Mora caught Jacobs being overly aggressive and dropped him.  Jacobs beat the count but his legs didn't look like they were fully back.  Luckily for Jacobs the fight would end the very next round.  Mora took a punch off the top of his head and went down and as he did his leg folded under him.  Mora was left unable to continue and suffered a broken ankle which left Jacobs the winner.

  • The weekend's action started on Friday night when Daniel Lozano took on Ricardo Rodriguez.  It was an exciting fight even though it turned out to be very one-sided in favor of Rodriguez.  Things did get interesting late however, when in the final round Lozano started landing some serious power punches.  Rodriguez was able to survive though and he came away with the win.
