Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Perhaps the most exciting fight of this past week came on Tuesday.  The fight was buried in deep cable on Fox Sports 2 and featured Vyacheslav Shabranskyy going up against Paul Parker.  Shabranskyy was the favorite heading into the fight but he was shockingly dropped twice in the very 1st round.  Not only had Shabranskyy been dropped twice but he appeared to be in very bad shape and it looked like the fight wouldn't last much longer.  However, Shabranskyy was able to recover quickly and he looked solid in the 2nd round.  Then in the 3rd round Shabranskyy started to let his power punches go, he got Parker in a bad spot and the referee stopped the fight as Parker was turning his back to the onslaught of punishment.

  •  On Thursday night the heavy handed Gilberto Gonzalez took the stage on Fox Deportes.  Gonzalez was in the ring against Hevinson Herrera and he was dominant.  Gonzalez controlled the action early and it didn't take long before he finished Herrera off.  In the 3rd round Gonzalez caught Herrera with an uppercut that sent him staggering across the ring, and the fight wasn't long from there.  Gonzalez had Herrera trapped on the ropes, unleashed some power punches, and the referee jumped in to stop the fight.

  • On July 4th there were a pair of fights on UniMas that ended in disappointment.  The card was headlined by a fight between Ramon Alvarez and Richard Gutierrez.  In the 4th round a clash of heads left Gutierrez unable to continue and the fight was ruled a no contest.  Also on that card was a bout between David Carmona and Warlito Parrenas.  That fight too would end in an unsatisfying way, when after 12 rounds it was ruled a draw.
