Telemundo Quick Pick

Romulo Koasicha vs. Guillermo Avila: This weekend will be a busy one for boxing, well actually only Saturday night will be busy.  On Friday there is only one televised card and that will be on Telemundo.  The main event of that card will be a 12-round bout between Romulo Koasicha (24-4, 14 KO) and Guillermo Avila (15-3, 12 KO) in the featherweight division, one of the best in boxing.  The thing about these two fighters is that while they beat average fighters they can never beat good ones.  Koasicha's only notable fight came against Lee Selby in 2014 and he lost nearly every round in that bout.  Since that loss Koasicha has three wins but they have come against opponents with records of 44-16, 19-2-1, and 9-11.  Avila has three notable opponents in Wilfredo Vasquez Jr., Jonathan Oquendo, and Andrey Klimov and he lost all three of those fights.  Since his last loss, which came against Klimov, Avila has also won three fights in a row but they have come against opponents with a combined record of 51-62, including one whose record was an abysmal 0-15.  Koasicha is an orthodox fighter with a strong left hook that he likes to throw upstairs.  However, Koasicha will often follow that left hook up with a wild right hand upstairs and when he does that he is wide open for a counter attack.  Koasicha also has a pretty nice jab but he doesn't use it all that often and typically just walks in behind a high guard.  Clearly Koasicha's best work comes on the inside where he can land his power punches and where his punches seem to be crisper and shorter.  On defense though, Koasicha isn't great and he will often just punch along with his opponent which can be dangerous.  Avila is also an orthodox fighter and while he has good power he is a wild puncher.  Like his opponent, Avila likes to fight on the inside and he doesn't us his jab nearly as often as he should.  He carries with him to the ring a mile wide left hook and a dangerous right hand that he swings wildly.  This fight has draw written all over it.  Both fighter have faced bad fighters recently and both tends to be wild with there punches while not using their jab enough.  However, Avila has more experience against top competition and he is the fighter with heavier hands.  This fight should go down to the wire but the power of Avila will allow him to get the split decision win.
