Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Miguel Cotto looked spectacular against a drained Daniel Geale on Saturday night.  Cotto stopped Geale in the 4th round after Geale said he didn't want to continue after taking numerous punches, the best being a picture perfect left hook that nearly sent him out of the ring.  After the fight Cotto said he plans to take on Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and also hinted that despite being the lineal middleweight champion of the world that his future bouts would be at catchweights.

  • On Saturday afternoon's PBC card Robert Guerrero was lucky to leave the ring with a win over Aaron Martinez.  Guerrero was dropped in the 4th round and was in very bad shape but came on strong later in the fight to get the split decision victory.  This performance had to be a letdown for Guerrero who was the heavy favorite entering the fight.  Also on NBC and NBC Sports was a strong performance from the heavy hitting Jesus Cuellar.  He knocked out Vic Darchinyan in the 8th round of their entertaining fight.  Fading veteran Alfredo Angulo was also able to get a win following three losses in a row.  However, it came against Delray Raines who is far from being tough competition.  Angulo looked slow, very slow, but he was able to drop Raines three times before knocking him out in the 5th round.  Marvin Sonsona also squeezed out a win on Saturday afternoon which keeps him in the picture among featherweight contenders.

  • On Friday night the unbeaten Jayson Velez entered the ring against Daniel Ramirez and was able to get a wide unanimous decision win.  This was the first fight for Velez following his controversial draw with Evgeny Gradovich and he looks to be once again ready to take a step up and do battle with a top fighter.
