Weekend Wrap-Up

  • In boxing it is possible to win a fight but still lose, just like how you can lose a fight but really win.  This weekend Amir Khan won his fight but in the eyes of many fans he still came out the loser.  Khan was in the ring against Chris Algieri who gave a great account of himself and has shown major improvements under new trainer John David Jackson.  Algieri left the ring with another loss on his record but he should find another big fight soon.  Khan, who has been chasing Floyd Mayweather for a few years did get the victory but he did not impress.  Khan looked slower than normal and never really took control against Algieri like he did against Devon Alexander.  If this fight was supposed to spring Khan to a showdown with Mayweather it may have backfired.  Also on that card was the unbeaten Javier Fortuna who got a decisive win and showed once again that when he steps in the ring excitement follows.

  •  On Friday night cruiserweight/heavyweight contender Lateef Kayode got a wide unanimous decision win.  However, despite getting a clear victory Kayode did not impress.  His opponent had never faced any top fighters and he is an opponent Kayode should have been able to finish before the final bell.  Kayode clearly has talent but there just seems to be something missing, and that something may stop him from ever winning a world title.

  • Saturday night brought fans a fight between Javier Mendoza and Milan Melindo.  The fight was stopped in the 6th round after a clash of heads caused cuts to both fighters.  The ringside doctor evaluated both men and after looking at Mendoza's cut he informed the ref that Mendoza could not continue.  The cut didn't seem to be horrible so it was somewhat of a strange stoppage but Mendoza did get the victory, winning nearly every round after the fight was forced to go to the scorecards.  Although Melindo got outgunned he did show a lot of heart and never stopped throwing return fire.
