Fox Sports 1 Quick Pick

Jayson Velez vs. Daniel Ramirez: Golden Boy Promotions has been trying to give some of their young prospects a push on Fox Sports 1 L.A. Fight Club series.  One of those prospects is Jayson Velez (22-0-1, 16 KO) and he will be headlining Thursday's card.  However, because Golden Boy Promotions is trying to showcase their prospects they put them in fights that are somewhat showcases themselves.  That is probably why Velez will be taking on Daniel Ramirez (11-2, 5 KO) in a 10-round bout in the featherweight division.  Ramirez has faced a slew of with either no career wins or just one win on their record and he is 1-2 in his last three trips to the ring.  As for Velez he has faced some nice veteran fighters in his most recent fight, which ended in a draw came against the highly skilled Evgeny Gradovich.  Velez is an orthodox pugilist who does a good job of mixing up fastballs with changeups when he throws his punches.  The young prospect has a solid jab and a good straight right hand which is his best punch.  While Velez also throws his uppercuts nicely his left hook isn't all that impressive and his defense could use some improving.  Ramirez is also an orthodox fighter but he doesn't have the same kind of pop on his punches that Velez does.  Ramirez has pretty quick hands and a job he doesn't use often enough.  However, he does have a nice overhand right and a quick left hook that he will land upstairs or to the body.  While Velez has only faced one true top tier fighter he fought a lot of veterans on the way up while Ramirez hasn't really faced anyone considered top tier.  That difference in competition will play a role in Thursday's fight as Velez will be sharper and stronger on his way to a 7th round stoppage victory.
