Fox Deportes Quick Pick

Mijares has looked good since his last loss
Cristian Mijares vs. Vergel Nebran: Friday night only brings fans one notable fight and "notable" might be an overstatement.  That fight will be on Fox Deportes and will be a 10-round, junior lightweight bout between Cristian Mijares (51-8-2, 25 KO) and Vergel Nebran (13-8-1, 8 KO).  Nebran is 25 years old and is neither a prospect or a contender and is usually just brought in as an opponent.  Mijares is a former title holder who would love another shot at a title and at 33 years old he needs to get that shot soon.  The last big fight Mijares was involved in was against Leo Santa Cruz back in 2014 and he lost a wide unanimous decision win.  However, since that loss Mijares has a stoppage win and a wide decision win.  Mijares fights out of the southpaw stance and likes to put combinations together.  He still has fairly quick hands and throws a nice straight right hand and also has quality uppercuts from close range.  While Mijares doesn't use his jab as often as he probably should he does throw a solid right hook.  Nebran is a young orthodox fighter who has never faced a fighter as good as Mijares before in his career.  The young Nebran likes to play the role of counter puncher in most of his fights and at times can be frustratingly inactive.  Nebran rarely uses a jab and instead just waits to throw wild left hooks and right hands and he finds himself constantly out of position.  If this fight isn't all Mijares it will be a shock.  Mijares is more talented and has fought a much higher level of opposition and all of that will help him dominate Nebran on his way to an 8th round stoppage.
