CBS Quick Picks

Rances Barthelemy vs. Antonio DeMarco: It is rare to see boxing on a Sunday afternoon so this Sunday will be a Father's Day treat for those fathers who happen to be boxing heads.  Sunday's card will be on CBS and it has an exciting main event lined up.  That fight will be a 10-round, junior welterweight crap between the undefeated Rances Barthelemy (22-0, 13 KO) and veteran Antonio DeMarco (31-4-1, 23 KO).  It will be Barthelemy's first fight at 140 pounds and he picked a dangerous opponent to go up against.  Barthelemy is a slick Cuban boxer who plies his trade out of the orthodox stance.  However, he isn't exactly your typical Cuban boxer like Guillermo Rigondeaux or Erislandy Lara may be, he is more aggressive.  The Cuban has a solid jab and a quick left hook he likes to double up.  Barthelemy also shows a good right hand but he really gets the best results with his left hook.  Defensively Barthelemy is also very skilled and although he isn't a big name yet he looks like a fighter who will make a splash in whatever weight division he choses to fight in.  DeMarco is a true veteran and he has some impressive, and brutal wins over the likes of Jorge Linares and John Molina.  While he does have his fair share of losses they have usually come against top fighters such as Adrien Broner, Jessie Vargas, and the late Edwin Valero.  DeMarco likes to fight on the inside and does so out of the southpaw stance.  While his jab is decent his best work comes in close where he can land right hooks and uppercuts with his left hand.  DeMarco also has a beautiful straight left hand that can do some serious damage.  DeMarco is only 29 years old but he seems much older and has been fighting professionally since 2004.  While DeMarco is a very good fighter he may be just a step below Barthelemy who looks like he is the real deal.  This will be an exciting fight throughout and it is one that will go to the scorecards and have Barthelemy winning by the way of unanimous decision.

Sammy Vasquez vs. Wale Omotoso: The co-feature for Saturday's special Father's Day card should be an electric one.  It features two heavy handed fighters in Sammy Vasquez (18-0, 13 KO) and Wale Omotoso (25-1, 21 KO).  The two knockout specialists will be going 10 rounds in the welterweight division, and it will be an important fight for both.  Vasquez is looking to make the move from prospect to contender and has been beating some quality opposition while making his name on lower level cards.  Omotoso has already had his big fight when he took on Jessie Vargas in 2013,  fight he lost.  Besides Vargas, Omotoso has fought a lot of sub par competition so it will be interesting to see how he handles Vasquez.  Vasquez is a southpaw who has a busy jab and a fan friendly style.  Along with that often used jab, Vasquez also makes good work out of his straight left hand, and will throw his left hand crooked to the body, a punch that lands with a thud.  The best punch Vasquez throws is his right hook and it can be devastating whether he throws it upstairs or to the body, and he will also throw uppercuts with his right hand and that is a punch he finds a lot of success with.  As for Omotoso, he is an orthodox fighter with a very good jab and an equally good straight right hand.  The crooked punches of Omotoso like his left hook can do damage, but his straight right hand is clearly his best punch.  The problem for Omotoso is that he tends to drop his off hand when he is throwing a punch and he always seems to be wide open for return fire.  That on top of the fact that he has been facing sub par fighters could mean he gets exposed against Vasquez.  This fight should be a fun one that sees both fighters trade heavy leather.  Omotoso has never been knocked out and that chin may be the only reason he makes it to the final bell.  This is a huge opportunity for Vasquez to show just how talented he is and he will take advantage of it and win the fight via unanimous decision.
