Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Well, the fight didn't live up to the hype.  The megafight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao will not be one that is remembered years from now for its scintillating action, instead it will be remembered for Mayweather easily taking care of business against Pacquiao.  Some may say the fight was boring, but those are people unfamiliar with how Mayweather fights, who were probably expecting something along the lines of Gatti-Ward 1.  Mayweather proved the doubters wrong and solidified his standing as the greatest fighter of his era.  After the fight Mayweather flashed his 100 million dollar check to reporters while Pacquiao insisted he thought he won the fight.  Also it was learned that Pacquiao fought with a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder and will be out 9-12 months.  With talk of Pacquiao being diminished on fight night, and all that money to be made, don't rule out a rematch sometime in 2016, even if Mayweather insists he will retire after his next fight in September.

  • On the undercard of the Mayweather-Pacquiao card were two terrible fights with two very good fighters in each.  First Vasyl Lomachenko knocked out Gamalier Rodriguez in the 9th round to get his fourth career win.  Then in the co-feature Leo Santa Cruz, whose recent opponents have turned his fans off beat another tomato can in the form of Jose Cayetano.  Santa Cruz won all 10 rounds on all three judges scorecards in a fight that should have never happened.  If Santa Cruz doesn't face a top opponent in his next fight he may not have any fans left.

  • On the first edition of Top Rank foray into free TV with a card on truTV veteran Raymundo Beltran scored a brilliant win following his recent loss to Terence Crawford.  Beltran was in the ring with Takahiro Ao and dominated every second of the fight to get a 2nd round stoppage win.  It was a fantastic performance for Beltran but it was marred by the fact that he came in overweight so he didn't win the title that was on the line.  Also on that card were a pair of undefeated fighters in Konstantin Ponomarev and Mikael Zewski.  Ponomarev was the better man in that fight, easily beating Zewski by the way of unanimous decision.

  • There was also some boxing action on Thursday night on Fox Sports 1 and Friday Night Fights.  Two fighters signed to Mayweather Promotions, Ishe Smith and Ashley Theophane got wins in fairly impressive fashion.  Over on Fox Sports 1 Mercito Gesta and "the other" Carlos Molina fought to a disappointing draw, however, both fighters looked good so no knock to their stock.
