Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Boxing was back in prime time on free TV last night on NBC, and that is a great thing for the overall health of the sport.  The first telecast had its hits and misses but overall was good.  NBC definitely needs to invest in a better ring announcer and actually have him in the ring.  Also they need to let the fighters walk out to their own music with their team behind them.  NBC had each fighter come out and walk to the ring alone and every fighter looked uncomfortable while doing so.  As for the broadcast team both Laila Ali and BJ Flores were great in their roles.  Al Michaels was also good but Marv Albert was still shaking off some of the rust after having not called a fight in a very long time.  Sugar Ray Leonard was okay but it isn't hard to tell when he doesn't like a fighter on a personal level.

  • Keith Thurman looked very good against Robert Guerrero.  Thurman dropped Guerrero early in the fight and controlled the action from that point on despite a large knot growing on the side of his forehead.  In the 9th round it looked like Thurman was a second away from stopping Guerrero when the bell rang to end the round.  In the 10th round Guerrero came out hungry and looked good in the final three rounds while showing a ton of heart.  But make no mistake this fight was all Thurman, although both fighters should be in another big fight when they get back in the ring.

  • The fight between Adrien Broner and John Molina was basically unwatchable.  Broner easily dominated Molina with his had speed and jab.  Molina looked very tight and never loosened up.  All Molina could do was try to land one powerful right hand but Broner was too slick for him and controlled nearly every second of the fight.  People may not like Broner's personality but his skills cannot be denied.

  • Abner Mares got the win on NBC Sports last night but he was not impressive at all.  Mares said in a post-fight interview that he was under the weather on fight night and that may explain his flat performance.  Mares is an exciting fighter but he needs to get himself a big fight, that is if his confidence is still there.

  • Joseph Diaz Jr. looked fantastic in his fight.  He put a beating on his opponent and dropped him three times in the 3rd round.  The final knockdown was ruled a no knockdown because the referee ruled the punch came after the bell.  Still Diaz Jr. was awarded a technical knockout and looked very good doing so.

  • Power punching prospect Tony Harrison looked lights out on Friday Night Fights.  He manhandled Antwone Smith and scored a 2nd round stoppage in an eye opening performance.  It was just the type of fight Harrison needed to turn in to really make people take notice.

  • Over on HBO2 Zou Shiming might have just ended his career, at least outside of China.  Shiming who doesn't have a very fan friendly style looked horrible against Amnat Ruenroeng.  Shiming lost a unanimous decision win in an unwatchable fight that will certainly  turn fans off.  However, Glen Tapia looked great on that card.  He moves to 3-0 under new trainer Freddie Roach and was dominate in a 3rd round stoppage of Daniel Dawson.  Tapia began the fight boxing very nicely and then put his power punches together when he needed to.
