Telemundo Quick Pick

Oquendo needs to string a few wins together
Jonathan Oquendo vs. Gabino Cota: There are plenty of skilled fighters who can never seem to get over the hump to the A-level.  One of those fighters is Jonathan Oquendo (24-4, 16 KO).  Oquendo has talent but has lost every step up fight he has been in against fighters like Abner Mares, Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., and Juan Manuel Lopez.  Oquendo is coming off of a loss to Mares and really needs to put a few wins together.  He will start that journey on Friday on Telemundo when he takes on Gabino Cota (17-3-1, 15 KO).  The fight is scheduled to go 10 rounds in the featherweight division and should be a fun one.  Oquendo is an orthodox fighter who likes to do battle on the inside.  He uses his strong jab to set up his right hand and he goes to the body well when he can get in close.  On the outside Oquendo has some trouble finding the proper distance to throw punches from but his straight right hand is solid.  The reason this fight should be so fun is because Cota also likes to fight on the inside.  He is an orthodox fighter who likes to dig his left hook to the body and also throws very good uppercuts.  While Cota does have very good power he has only shown it against sub par fighters and his only top opponent has been Andrey Klimov who beat him easily by the way of unanimous decision.  Both fighters need a win, Oquendo is coming off of a loss, while Cota is coming off back-to-back losses.  Whoever can take the most punishment on the inside should win this fight and that will be Oquendo who gets the victory by the way of unanimous decision.
