Fox Sports 1 Quick Pick

Joseph Diaz Jr. vs. Juan Luis Hernandez: With the careers of Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao nearing an end, the boxing world is buzzing about who will be the next crop of top fighters.  There are a number of fighters already in the pound-for-pound rankings who are ready to take their spots but the intrigue comes in discussing young prospects who look like future stars.  Those prospects include Errol Spence Jr., Felix Verdejo, and Joseph Diaz Jr. (14-0, 9 KO) who will be headlining this week's Fox Sports 1 card.  Diaz Jr. will be taking on veteran Juan Luis Hernandez (17-4-1, 9 KO) in a 10 round junior featherweight fight.  At only 22 years old Diaz Jr. is still a few years away from being a true contender but as it stands now he is a fun prospect to keep an eye on.  Diaz Jr. is a southpaw with fast hands and some pop on his punches.  Diaz Jr. has some flaws, as all young prospects do, and he needs to improve his jab but his straight left hand is already a nice weapon.  Another weapon the southpaw has is a nice short right hook.  Diaz Jr. needs to tighten up his defense going forward but against the opponents he has been facing it hasn't been a problem, and probably won't be against Hernandez.  The only opponent Hernandez has faced who actually had a good record came in his last bout which he lost by a wide margin on the scorecards.  Up until that point Hernandez had been fighting below average fighters and still managed to rack up four career losses, three of which came by the way of knockout.  Hernandez is an orthodox fighter with a good long jab but his power punches tend to get wild, especially his right hand.  Also defensively Hernandez tends to take a lot of clean punches and should be open for Diaz Jr. to tag.  At this point in his career, the team around Diaz Jr. would not put him in with an opponent who is very dangerous so expect this fight to be all Diaz Jr. until he gets the 9th round stoppage.
