Friday Night Fights Quick Picks

Last year ESPN put together a tournament called "Boxcino" that featured lightweights and middleweights.  Both the lightweight and middleweight tournaments turned out to be a huge success and provided fans with good action and surprisingly little controversy.  So coming off the heels of last year's success ESPN will role out another edition of the Boxcino Tournament featuring junior middleweights and heavyweights.  While the heavyweights will have to wait a week the junior middleweights will be doing battle this Friday in the quarterfinal round with all fights going 6 rounds.  Now lets get to the picks...

John Thompson vs. Ricardo Pinell: The Boxcino Tournament is a great opportunity for unknown fighters to raise their profiles and John Thompson (14-1, 5 KO) and Ricardo Pinell (10-1-1, 6 KO) will be looking to do just that.  Originally this fight was supposed to be between Cleotis Pendarvis and Pinell but Pendarvis missed weight which gave Thompson his opportunity.  Thompson is a tall, orthodox fighter but is coming off his first career loss which came by stoppage.  He has quick hands and reflexes which is why sometimes he will keep his hands low, which got him in trouble against Frank Galarza in his last bout.  Thompson's jab is alright but he throws a very nice left hook and a strong right hand.  However at times Thompson can get wild and will leave himself open to get countered.  Like Thompson, Pinell hasn't fought any notable fighters.  Also Pinell has only ever gone 6 rounds so if he advances in the tournament his inexperience could become a factor.  Pinell is a southpaw fighter who is very aggressive.  He has a decent short right hook but his best punch is his heavy left hand which can end fights.  The problems is that Pinell has been knocking out fighters with only a few professional fights or with losing records and hasn't faced any top talent.  Thompson lost his last fight when he got caught by a big left hook so he will need to be careful not to get caught with his hands down against Pinell.  Thompson may come in a bit cautious and should stick to boxing Pinell from the outside.  If Thompson plays it safe he will win the fight by the way of unanimous decision.

Stanyslav Skorohod vs. Michael Moore: One of the other fights in the Boxcino Tournament will feature two pugilists with perfect records.  Stanyslav Skorohod (8-0, 6 KO) will be facing off against Michael Moore (13-0, 6 KO) in a bout that will see one of their zeros go.  Skorohod is an orthodox fighter with a nice stiff jab.  Also for such a young fighter Skorohod does a good job of cutting off the ring and getting his opponent in dangerous situations.  Skorohod doesn't have much of a left hook and he throws it like a jab but turns it over at the last second.  His best punch is certainly his heavy right hand and he likes to use the jab to set it up.  When it comes to Moore it is hard to tell how good or bad he is because there is no tape of him online.  When there is not even a youtube clip of a fighter online that is never a good sign and usually means he has never been in a notable fight.  While Moore is undefeated only four of his opponents had winning records and those records were 19-13-3, 3-2, 2-1-1, and 2-1-1.  Not only has Skorohob faced a higher level of competition than Moore has but he also tends to stop all of his opponents.  Moore could surprise some people but that is doubtful and Skorohod will get the victory via 4th round stoppage.

Brandon Adams vs. Alex Perez: The favorite to win the Boxcino Tournament in the junior middleweight division may very well be Brandon Adams (15-1, 10 KO).  Adams took place in the middleweight tournament last year and made it to the finals before losing to Willie Monroe Jr..  Now Adams has dropped back down to his natural fighting weight and will take on veteran Alex Perez (18-1, 10 KO).  Adams is a strong, aggressive fighter but he is in desperate need of a jab because he usually comes forward behind nothing but power punches.  Adams does have a nice left hook and his best punch is his wild overhand right which he really loads up on.  Perez is a different type of prizefighter.  He is tall for the junior middleweight division and fights as a southpaw.  Perez uses his height pretty well and likes to jab from the outside.  He will throw a right hook but it comes in pretty slow and his left hand is a much better weapon for him.  While Perez may not advance in the tournament he can take solace in the fact that he has one of the best nicknames in boxing "The Brick City Bullet" which pays homage to his hometown of Newark, NJ.  Perez will need to really keep his jab busy and stay on the outside to avoid the power and aggression of Adams.  This could be a close fight but the power of Adams will be the difference and he will win the fight with a 5th round knockout.

Vito Gasparyan vs. Simeon Hardy: The fourth fight in the junior middleweight tournament should be an interesting one.  Vito Gasparyan (14-3-5, 8 KO) will be facing off against Simeon Hardy (13-0, 10 KO).  Gasparyan has had some incredibly bad luck scoring five draws in his career but out of his three career losses two came against the very talented Jermell Charlo and Jessie Vargas.  Across the ring Hardy does have a perfect record but he has never faced any top talent.  Gasparyan has a nice jab from the orthodox stance plus a good straight right hand.  His problem is his movement, he doesn't move around the ring very well and usually is there to be hit.  Hardy is also an orthodox fighter but he carries much more power than Gasparyan does.  Hardy has a stiff jab along with a powerful left hook.  Another weapon he has in his arsenal is a straight right hand.  There isn't much tape of Hardy online which could be worrisome and he has never faced any top opponents but his power seems legit and he will win the fight by the way of unanimous decision.
