- The highlight of this weekend was supposed to be the rubber match between Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado but it turned out to be a letdown. It was clear from the start that only Rios actually prepared for the fight. He looked as sharp as ever and his uppercuts on the inside were deadly. Rios salvaged his career with that fight and can now remain at the top level getting big fights.
- Mike Alvarado's troubles have certainly caught up to him. He was arrested before the fight because he was in possession of a weapon and although he said it wasn't a distraction it clearly was. After the 3rd round it was obvious Alvarado wanted no more and actually looked that was after the very 1st round. He hasn't been the same fighter since his bout with Ruslan Provodnikov who seemed to take the heart right out of Alvarado. Alvarado gave a post-fight interview where he said he didn't prepare properly for the Rios fight and that he wasn't done fighting. His hometown fans rained down boos upon him and the smart thing for the ring warrior to do would be to retire.
- The third fight between Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado was supposed to be the exclamation point on a historic trilogy. Instead it was a massive disappointment. It was all Rios from the start and it was clear that the Alvarado from the first two fights didn't show up for the third. Unfortunately the third fight has taken some of the life out of the trilogy but don't be mistaken, every classic trilogy had one fight that wasn't as great as the other two. The first two fights between Rios and Alvarado were so good that this trilogy will still go down as a classic.
- Gilberto Ramirez is trying to become the next Mexican superstar but he didn't exactly impress in his HBO debut. Ramirez has plenty of power but he still has some major flaws in his game. His hands aren't very fast and he looks clumsy at times, but he is still young and could still become a star in the future.
