UniMas Quick Picks

Jorge Paez Jr. vs. Aaron Herrera: Tonight many boxing fans will have to do their best to remember all the Spanish they learned in high school.  That is because both televised cards on Saturday night will be on Spanish language television.  One of those cards will be on UniMas and will be headlined by Jorge Paez Jr. (37-5-1, 22 KO) and Aaron Herrera (27-3, 17 KO).  The young welterweights are scheduled to go 10 rounds and both could use a win.  Paez Jr. is an orthodox fighter whose best punch is his left hook.  He doesn't have a very good jab and uses it more as a range finder than anything else.  Paez Jr. also has a solid right hand that he will follow up his left hooks with.  The problem for Paez Jr. is that he is rendered ineffective by fighters who have good jabs.  He is aggressive but has a problem getting inside when his opponents uses the jab early and often.  Luckily for Paez Jr. his opponent Herrera doesn't have a very good jab.  Herrera is an orthodox fighter who likes to bang on the inside.  He goes to the body well with his left hook and right hand but his style of fighting also forces him to take a lot of punishment.  This fight could come down to who handles the welterweight division better.  Paez Jr. typically fights at junior middleweight while Herrera usually campaigns as a junior welterweight.  This fight should be a close one but the bigger and slightly sharper Paez Jr. should be able to win it by the way of majority decision.

Miguel Berchelt vs. Antonio Escalante: The co-feature of tonight's UniMas card will be a bout between Miguel Berchelt (23-1, 20 KO) and Antonio Escalante (29-6, 20 KO) and its scheduled to go 10 rounds in the junior lightweight division.  This fight should be a very exciting one considering Berchelt is such a big puncher and Escalente has a tendency to get knocked out.  Out of Escalante's six career losses five of them how come by the way of knockout.  Berchelt has also shown some vulnerability, in his lone loss he was stopped in the 1st round when he threw a wide left hook and got countered.  Although that stoppage was quick his chin is still a question.  Berchelt is an orthodox puncher with a good jab and a good straight right hand.  One problem Berchelt does have is that he retreats straight back on defense which is always a good way to get yourself knocked out.  Although Berchelt's left hook can come in wild at times that is his money punch and the punch he will usually end fights with.  While Berchelt hasn't faced any top fighters his opponent Escalante has.  Escalante has been in the ring against Daniel Ponce De Leon, Rocky Juarez, and Roberto Marroquin.  Unfortunately Escalente has lost of of his step up fights and he lost all of them by knockout.  Escalante is also an orthodox fighter and he has pretty good had speed which allows him to land his jab consistently.  He also throws a nice left hook to the body but he does tend to throw his from too far away, especially his uppercuts.  This fight is all about the power of Berchelt against the terrible chin of Escalante.  Berchet will be able to take advantage of that weak chin and win this fight via 6th round knockout.
