HBO2 Fight Preview

Zou Shiming vs. Luis De La Rosa

It is a good thing for Zou Shiming that Macau, China is such a lucrative city otherwise the Chinese star might not find himself headlining so many HBO cards.  The former gold medalist Shiming is scheduled to go 10 rounds for the first time in his career as he takes on Luis De La Rosa in a flyweight fight.  Shiming is looking to get a title shot soon and looking great against the lesser De La Rosa will certainly help his case.

Shiming scored his first stoppage in his last bout
Shiming is an orthodox fighter who still has an amateur style.  He also resembles Manny Pacquiao in the sense that he feints a lot and throws punches from awkward angles.  Shiming has a nice jab and good straight right hand but he doesn't always turn his punches over and doesn't have much power behind them.  He is good defensively but not as good as you might expect for such a successful amateur and he will take some clean punches upstairs.  Shiming has looked good as a pro so far but it has come against no name opposition and it is unclear how well he will handle better competition.

After becoming an amateur star in China, Shiming turned pro in 2013 and went 3-0 that year.  Overall Shiming's record stands at 4-0 with only 1 knockout.  He hasn't faced any opponents that are worth mentioning and while he has looked good he hasn't yet looked great and still hasn't fully adapted to the pro style of boxing.  Now Shiming will look to get past De La Rosa and earn a title shot in the near future.

De La Rosa looks to upset the apple card
De La Rosa is an ultra aggressive fighter who throws wide, wild punches.  He doesn't really use a jab to help him get inside and tends to just walk straight in as he looks to land left hooks and right hands.  De La Rosa also has a bad habit of falling in with his punches and not staying safe defensively and his style should suit the counter punching Shiming very well.  De La Rosa does have more power than Shiming but he also has a bad chin and has been knocked out twice in his three losses.  Shiming should be a very tough test for De La Rosa and this will be the biggest fight of the Colombians career.

As a pro De La Rosa hasn't faced much good competition.  He won his last bout but that was against a fighter with a record of 0-20.  Most of his fights have come against fighters with losing records which makes his career record of 23-3-1 with 13 knockouts not as impressive.  Shiming will clearly be De La Rosa's toughest test and a win would be huge for him.

Like every one of Shiming's professional fights so far this should be a look good fight.  De La Rosa comes straight forward behind wide punches which should give the fast handed, counter punching Shiming plenty of opportunities to do damage.  Because of those opportunities look for Shiming to be more aggressive with his power punches as he tries to close the show early.

PREDICTION: Luis De La Rosa is the perfect opponent for Zou Shiming to pick apart and he will do just that.  Shiming is going to control every aspect of this fight on his way to an 8th round stoppage.

Gilberto Ramirez vs. Junior Talipeau

The other fight on Saturday's HBO2 card will be headlined by Mexico's next rising star, Gilberto Ramirez.  Ramirez is quickly becoming a fan favorite with his aggressive knockout style and looks like the real deal.  This time around Ramirez is scheduled to go 10 rounds in the super middleweight division against Australia's Junior Talipeau.

Ramirez has some serious power
Ramirez is a southpaw with plenty of power to compete against the best.  Ramirez is only 23 years old but seems to have a nice idea of what he is doing inside the squared circle.  He has a nice long jab and a quick yet powerful straight left hand.  Something Ramirez does very well for such a young fighter is stay home on defense when throwing combinations which will help him going forward.  When Ramirez throws his right hook and crooked left hand watch out because things are going to get dangerous.  He loves to dig his left hand to the body and does a lot of damage with it including ending fights early.  Ramirez still has rough edges to smooth out as his continues his climb to stardom but so far so good.

Ramirez hasn't yet fought any elite talent but he has been brought along at a nice pace against solid opposition.  As a pro he holds a record of 28-0 with an outstanding 22 knockouts.  Ramirez appears to be a future star with a lot of big names he can go after in the near future but he needs to be careful not to look past Talipeau or any opponent before he gets to that level.  One thing is for sure, if the knockouts keep coming fans will keep wanting to watch the Young Mexican fight.

Talipeau will look to pull off the upset
One thing that could play a role in this fight is height.  Ramirez is 6'2'' while his opponent Talipeau only stands at 5'7'' which is incredibly short for the super middleweight division.  That could also allow Ramirez to control the action with his jab.  To make that height difference a mute point Talipeau needs to get inside.  Getting inside will be tough for Talipeau though because he doesn't have a good jab.  One thing he does do well is go to the body which he will need to do early and often against Ramirez.  This will also be Talipeau's first fight outside of his native Australia so there is no telling how he will handle the change of scenery.

Talipeau doesn't have much power which is evident in his record of 20-2-1 with only 7 knockouts.  While he has never fought outside of Australia he is usually in the ring with solid competition and won't be in over his head against Ramirez.  Even tough Talipeau won't be in over his head he will be the underdog and will need to be very sharp to get the win.

This probably won't be the most exciting fight in the world because Ramirez should just be to big and strong for Talipeau to really do anything against.  Talipeau is a good veteran fighter and will give Ramirez everything he has but the problem is that Ramirez has much more.  Talipeau really needs to stay in the pocket and dig hard to the body but he may not be able to stay there to long if he can't handle the power of Ramirez.  This may not be the best fight but it could be a good performance for Ramirez as he tries to become Mexico's next star.

PREDICTION: Some people say size doesn't matter and Junior Talipeau hopes that is true.  But hope is all Talipeau really has against the bigger, stronger Gilberto Ramirez who will not knock Talipeau out but will break him down over the course of 10 rounds on his way to a wide unanimous decision win.
