Fox Deportes Quick Pick

Jhonny Gonzalez vs. Clive Atwell: This Saturday on Fox Deportes Jhonny Gonzalez (55-8, 47 KO) will be fighting for the first time since his stunning 1st round knockout of Abner Mares in 2013.  The two men were supposed to fight in a rematch however that was cancelled due to an injury suffered by Mares.  So instead Gonzalez will face off against the undefeated Guyanese fighter Clive Atwell (12-0-1, 7 KO) in a 12 round bout for Gonzalez's WBC featherweight title.  The problem for Atwell is that most of his fights have come against fighters with losing records and at 25 years old he has nowhere near the experience that the 32 year old Gonzalez does.  Gonzalez usually makes good fights due to his fan friendly style and power.  Gonzalez is an orthodox fighter with a nice jab that he likes to work behind.  Gonzalez is at his best however when he is putting his punches together and he has a good left hook that he likes to dig to the body.  While he does move pretty well in the ring he isn't exactly a slick defensive fighter.  Three of his eight losses have come by knockout and while he hasn't been stopped since 2009 he has hit the canvas since then.  With all the experience Gonzalez has he has never developed much of a right hand, but with his powerful left hook he doesn't really need one.  When Gonzalez catches an opponent with his left hook they usually drop so that will be the punch Atwell needs to avoid.  Atwell has never faced anyone in the same stratosphere as Gonzalez and most expect him to be severely outclassed.  Atwell is a long, lanky fighter and he does have a nice jab that if used properly can keep him out of danger.  However Atwell has a bad habit of reaching with his punches and throwing them out of position which leaves him open for powerful counter punches.  Atwell actually does pretty good work with both hands but he doesn't turn his punches over every time he throws them which is a problem.  The real question in this fight doesn't seem to be who will win but how long will the fight last.  Gonzalez is in a different class of fighters than Atwell is and that will be evident very early on.  I think Gonzalez will start off patiently for the first few rounds and then really start to pick Atwell apart on his way to a 6th round knockout.
