Telemundo Quick Pick

Villanueva hopes to remain unbeaten
Matthew Villanueva vs. David Carmona: There will be some good action come Friday night, especially the main event of Telemundo's card.  That fight will be headlined by the heavy hitting prospect Matthew Villanueva (11-0-1, 9 KO) as he takes on the young David Carmona (16-2-4, 8 KO) in a 12 round junior bantamweight bout.  Villanueva is still a work in progress and tends to fight with some nervous energy, bouncing around a lot.  He has a very good jab and also sometimes throws a power jab from awkward angles.  Villanueva typically starts fights from the outside until he slows his opponent down.  Once he has done that he likes to make it a phone booth fight and always throws heavy to the body.  Defensively he isn't the slickest fighter in the sport but his constant head movement and his nervous energy make him a difficult target, although not impossible to catch.  While Villanueva isn't anywhere near elite yet his tremendous power in both hands, especially for the lower weight classes, should make him a very avoided fighter.  One fighter who won't be able to avoid him is Carmona.  He hasn't had the best luck as a pro as one can see by his four draws, a very high number.  He was stopped in his last fight by the king of the division Omar Narvaez and if he wants to remain relevant he needs a win on Friday night.  Carmona is four years younger than Villanueva but has boxed double the rounds and has had many more fights so he will enter the ring with an experience advantage, but they may be his only one.  He isn't the most aggressive fighter and tends to get backed up but he has a cannon of a right hand and his left is nearly as powerful.  Carmona needs to be careful not to get into a slugfest with Villanueva who is the stronger fighter.  Carmona should stay on the outside where he can utilize his jab and sneaky right hand.  Carmona may find some early success but Villanueva's power will start to show in the middle rounds and he will win this fight via 8th round knockout.
