Friday Night Fights Quick Pick

Chris Algieri vs. Emmanuel Taylor: Instead of spending a fortune this Friday on flowers, chocolates, and dinner, spend Valentine's Day watching a great fight on ESPN2.  The main event of this week's Friday Night Fights card should be a spectacular one.  It will feature boxer Chris Algieri (18-0, 8 KO) facing off against slugger Emmanuel Taylor (17-1, 12 KO) in a 10 round junior welterweight bout.  Algieri is a very interesting fighter because he doesn't have a lot of power and is known primarily as a slick boxer.  However even though Algieri does like to control the distance of a fight and stay on the outside he often times forgets that strategy and will stand in front of his man and throw punch for punch.  Luckily for Algieri his fast hands and great ability to move his combinations from the head to body have allowed him to usually win those exchanges.  The best way to slow him down is to really dig into the body, which is something Taylor should focus on.  Taylor is know as a slugger with heavy hands.  His biggest win came in his last fight against Victor Cayo, Taylor got up off the deck to stop Cayo in the 8th round and showed fans how real his power is.  Although Taylor's hands are slower than Algieri's, his power is much better so he won't need to land as many punches to be effective.  If Algieri wants to stay undefeated he needs to use a strong jab and lateral movement to keep Taylor from sitting on his punches and landing the power.  If Taylor can touch up Algieri just a little bit in the early rounds he may be able to expand on that during the middle of the fight and start to really slow Algieri down.  If Taylor can land to the body and make Algieri stand and trade punches with him he may be strong enough to score a knockout and ruin Algieri's perfect record.  I expect Taylor to be able to do just that, slow Algieri down in the middle rounds and knock him out in the 8th round.
