Fox Deportes Quick Picks

Sergio Thompson vs. Cesar Chavez: If you're a fan of knockouts be sure not to miss the 10 round, junior welterweight fight between lethal puncher Sergio "Yeyo" Thompson (27-3, 25 KO) and Cesar Chavez (22-4, 9 KO) who just happens to have a glass jaw.  Thompson only cares about one thing, knocking guys out and that is very evident based on his style.  He doesn't make much use of his jab, instead choosing to throw crooked punches with deadly force.  Most of Thompson's power comes from his right hand but he also has good pop in his left.  He likes to come straight forward and stalk his opponent but to be effective he needs to get on the inside.  Thompson doesn't have very fast hands so when he tries to land punches from the outside he isn't always effective, especially against a slick boxer.  However when Thompson can keep a fight in the pocket he is a hard man to beat, or even survive against.  His opponent Chavez is the complete opposite.  Chavez is a boxer not a puncher and the only thing worse than his power may be his chin.  All four of Chavez's losses have been by knockout and against a fighter who always looks to finish the fight early that will be dangerous.  Most of Thompson's knockouts come early in fights and most of the time Chavez gets knocked out it also comes early, so whatever you do don't get up to grab another beer.  I predict Thompson will win this fight via 4th round knockout.

Frankie Gomez vs. Prince Doku Jr.: This card should be perfect for casual fans who like action fights because the other notable bout on this card features to heavy punchers.  Those fighters are the unbeaten Frankie Gomez (15-0, 11 KO) and Prince Doku Jr. (18-3, 12 KO).  This will also be a 10 round junior welterweight fight and will be only the second time that Gomez is scheduled to go ten rounds.  His team has brought him along slowly thus far which is a smart thing to do to build his confidence as he steps up to tougher fights.  This fight certainly marks one of the toughest tests of Gomez's young career so it should show fans how good he might become.  One thing Gomez will need to improve on going forward is his physical build.  He sometimes enters the ring looking a little soft and that will be something an intelligent body puncher will take advantage of.  Also when Gomez goes in for the kill he often forgets to stay home on defense and leaves himself wide open to counter punches.  Yet for his flaws Gomez also has some shining strengths most notable his tenacity and power.  He goes by the nickname "Pitbull" and that's exactly how he fights.  Doku Jr. is from Ghana and has never fought outside of it so this fight in Mexico might be a big shock for him.  He also hasn't been in a fighter over 8 rounds since a 2011 loss to Benjamin Ashley but is 6-0 since that loss with 4 knockouts.  If Doku Jr. wants to win this fight he will need to go to the body early and often in an attempt to weaken the body of the bigger puncher.  If Doku Jr. can surprise Gomez and start off strongly he may be able to pull off the upset.  However this looks more like a showcase fight for the 21 year old Gomez and I expect him to win this fight by the way of 7th round knockout.
