| Mares was upset in their first fight |
In August the number ten ranked pound for pound fighter in the world, Abner Mares was shocked by Jhonny Gonzalez. Gonzalez dropped Mares twice in the first round on his way to a 1st round knockout. Luckily for Mares he had a rematch clause and he made it clear after the loss that he intended to use it. Now that rematch is set with Mares and Gonzalez set to fight again on February 15th at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Gonzalez wasn't to thrilled with the prospect of a rematch and threatened to not go through with the fight. However when Golden Boy Promotions chief executive Richard Schafer threatened to have him stripped of his title he agreed to the rematch.
