2013 Round of the Year

Winner
Round 6: Darren Barker vs. Daniel Geale

Why round 6 of the fight between Darren Barker and Daniel Geale won Round of the Year is pretty simple.  Barker got rocked by the type of vicious body shot that fighters just don't get up from, but he did.  It was an unreal moment, Barker was doubled over in pain and it looked like the fight was over yet somehow he made it to his feet.  Not only did Barker make it to his feet but he fought back and looked good for the rest of the round.  Round 6 of this fight had good action for all of its three minutes but the reason is stands out is because of what Barker did.  Head shots always look better to fans but its the body shots that do the real damage, the fact that he was able to make it to his feet and not only fight on but look good and end up winning the fight when he should have been knocked out is the reason round 6 wins Round of the Year.

Runner-Up
Round 10: John Molina vs. Mickey Bey

The only reason round 10 of the John Molina and Mickey Bey fight didn't win this award is because the action wasn't all that great throughout the round.  Instead it gets runner-up because of the one electrifying moment.  Molina was losing the fight and Bey was cruising to an easy victory when everything changedBey got overconfident trying to close the show with a knockout when Molina caught him with a perfect short left hand that badly hurt Bey.  Molina followed that up with some monster right hands as the inexperienced Bey was unable to clinch the veteran fighter.  Molina got Bey up against the ropes and unloaded on him forcing the referee to jump in and stop the fight.  What made this round so great is what makes boxing so great, you can be easily winning a fight but everything can change from one single punch.  Molina not only won the fight with this round but he also may have saved his career.

Honorable Mention
Round 7: Jesus Cuellar vs. Claudio Marrero

This round was so good that it brought fans to their feet only halfway through it.  What made round 7 of the fight between Jesus Cuellar and Claudio Marrero so good was how back and forth the action was.  Marrero was down in round 6 but came out swinging in round 7 and looked great early.  Then out of nowhere on came Cuellar.  At one point Marrero had Cuellar in the corner and a split second later Cuellar turned the tables and had Marrero in trouble in the corner.  It isn't often that in a single round both fighters look like they may get stopped but that's exactly what round 7 in this fight brought fans.

In The Running
Round 2 & 6: Timothy Bradley vs. Ruslan Provodnikov

The thing that made both the 2nd and 6th rounds of the fight between Timothy Bradley and Ruslan Provodnikov so exciting were the exact same thing, heart and guts.  In both rounds Bradley was seemingly out on his feet and Provodnikov was going in for the kill, however Bradley was able to survive both rounds.  Both rounds could have been easily stopped by the referee but Bradley wouldn't allow it.  Even while out on his feet he never stopped throwing punches and was even able to land some power shots of his own.  It was truly an amazing thing to watch the ultra aggressive Provodnikov go in for the kill against a badly hurt Bradley but not be able to drop him.  Bradley showed a tremendous amount of heart but not taking a knee and even more guts by throwing power punches in return and leaving himself open for more punishment.

Round 2: James Kirkland vs. Glen Tapia
The entire time James Kirkland and Glen Tapia were in the ring together it was brutal, especially the 2nd round.  Tapia started off the 1st round fast and buzzed Kirkland then came the 2nd round when Kirkland turned the tables on Tapia and wobbled him.  Kirkland was controlling most of the round but after he wobbled Tapia the hurt fighter dug down deep and started firing and landing heavy bombs of his own.  That didn't last long however and Kirkland regained control, that was until the final moments of the round.  Tapia came out of nowhere and landed some massive body shots against Kirkland.  When the round ended it was clear that this was going to be a great fight and that fans just witnessed an amazing round.
