Friday Night Fights Quick Picks

Gabriel Campillo vs. Andrzej Fonfara: This Friday night history will be made in Chicago, Illinois.  For the first time in 50 years there will be boxing in a Chicago baseball stadium.  The last time that happened was when Sonny Liston knocked out Floyd Paterson in 1962.  This fight will be held at U.S. Cellular Field, home of the White Sox and is scheduled for 12 rounds in the light heavyweight division.  The two men who will headline this historic card are Gabriel Campillo (22-5-1, 5 KO) and the "Polish Prince" Andrzej Fonfara (23-2, 13 KO).  Having a Polish fighter headline the card was a smart move considering Chicago has an extremely high Polish population and they love to support their fighters.  Neither one of these fighters posses any knockout power and rely more on their boxing skills which could make for a good night of sustained action.  Campillo is probably best known for being utterly destroyed by Sergey Kovalev on NBC Sports back in January but he is a quality fighter who usually gives his opponent a real problem, especially since he is a southpaw.  Campillo is a notoriously slow starter, something that worked against him in his fight against Kovalev.  Against Fonfara look for Campillo to start earlier than usual to keep Fonfara from controlling the pace.  Controlling the pace is something that Fonfara is highly skilled at.  He loves to work steadily behind his jab and use his height and reach to stay on the outside.  Fonfara doesn't have much power but he throws hard and with bad intentions.  Of the two fighters Fonfara is the one with less experience against top level talent.  His biggest opponent thus far was Glenn Johnson he he easily beat.  To win, Fonfara will have to cut off the ring from Campillo who always uses his feet well.  If Campillo dances around all night he could frustrate Fonfara and win easily but I expect Fonfara to continuously put Campillo in the corner and work him hard to the body en route to a split decision win.

Artur Szpilka vs. Mike Mollo: Another notable fight this Friday will feature another Polish fighter.  That fighter is Artur Szpilka (15-0, 11 KO) and he will be challenging  veteran U.S. fighter Mike Mollo (20-4-1, 12 KO).  This fight will be a 10 round affair in the heavyweight division.  These boxers should be very familiar with each other considering they have already fought in February of this year.  That was an 8 round fight where Szpilka knocked Mollo out in the 6th round.  Since that loss Mollo has not been in the ring while Szpilka has fought twice since, winning both fights.  But Mollo also dropped Szpilka twice in that fight in the 1st and 4th rounds, probably because Szpilka has a bad habit of moving straight back to avoid punches which is always a good recipe for getting knocked out.  Their first fight saw three knockdowns and a ton of blood and hopefully the second time around will be just as fun.  Mollo might be rusty though because before his first fight against Szpilka he hadn't fought in two and a half years and as stated before hasn't fought since.  This fight could be a good way for Szpilka's team to show the world how much their fighter has improved.  If Szpilka's defense looks sharper and he doesn't get dropped people will see how well he has been progressing in his career.  If he does hit the canvass again he may need to go back to the drawing board.  I expect Mollo to look very rusty and very slow and Szpilka will get the win via 4th round knockout.
