Marcos Maidana vs. Josesito Lopez: This Saturday in Carson California there will be a very entertaining 12 round welterweight fight. The fight showcases two talented fighters looking to make a statement. Those fighters are the knockout artist Marcos Maidana (33-3, 30 KO) and the "Riverside Rocky" Josesito Lopez (30-5, 18 KO). Lopez earned that nickname because even though he isn't the most talented fighter he has a ton of heart and is tough as nails. Of his 5 losses 3 have come against very talented fighters in Edgar Santana, Jessie Vargas, and Canelo Alvarez, and his biggest win was against Victor Ortiz when Lopez broke Ortiz's jaw and he was unable to continue. Lopez will need to muster all of his toughness if he wants to beat Maidana. Maidana only has 3 losses and they came against some of the top fighters in the sport, Amir Khan in a very close and exciting battle, Devon Alexander in Alexander's hometown, and Andriy Kotelnik. The game plan for each fighter is pretty simple, Maidana needs to close the gap, get in close and punish Lopez. And Lopez will need to use his jab and footwork to keep Maidana from making this a phone booth fight. It should be a great fight in which neither fighter gives in. Lopez might be able to outbox Maidana but he will need to be close to perfect to do it. I see Maidana beating Lopez down in a similar fashion as Alvarez did. It's a good tough fight but Maidana gets a 9th round TKO, and bigger fights to come.
Alfredo Angulo vs. Erislandy Lara: The appetizer to the main course is a fantastic one. It features two of the most underrated fighters in the sport, fighters who casual fans really need to start paying attention to. It will be a 12 round junior middleweight fight between hard hitting Mexican Alfredo Angulo (22-2, 18 KO) and ultra slick Cuban Erislandy Lara (17-1-2, 11 KO). This fight is a complete contrast of styles. Angulo loves a phone booth style fight where he can sit down on his power punches and punish his opponent, while Lara in typical Cuban fashion likes to stick and move using great footwork and defense to hit and not be hit. Lara's lone loss came against Paul Williams in a fight that he utterly dominated by punishing Williams with a right hand all night, but the judges blew it giving Williams a very tight decision victory. Since that loss he is 2-0-1 with his last fight against Vanes Martirosyan ending in a draw because of an ugly cut over the eye of Martirosyan, but many viewers were critical of Lara in that fight saying he did a lot of running. Lara's opponent on Saturday has never been accused of running. Angulo is the most exciting fighter no one has heard of. He has only gone a full 12 rounds one time in his career and that is because he looks to end fights early and painfully. He has scored seven first round knockouts, and most of his fights don't go past 6 rounds. Lara will try to outbox Angulo and take the fight the distance and with his high skill level he could easily do it. But Lara will need to be perfect defensively because it only takes Angulo one punch to end your night early. If Lara throws punches the way he did against Williams this could be a very short night for either fighter and a possible Fight of the Year candidate because it would surely end in a knockout. This fight could also be a letdown if Lara plays it too safe and fights the way he did against Martirosyan. On the other hand everyone already knows how Angulo will fight, he will constantly force the pressure, and look for an early knockout. I think Angulo will wear down the slighter Lara and knock him out in the 9th round. Big things are in the future for both fighters but because he doesn't have as an exciting style a win is more important for the career of Lara. Angulo is a guy who even when he looses he is so exciting that he will always get televised fights, but a win against such a talented, defensive, counter puncher will do big things in helping Angulo make fights with the biggest names in the sport, specifically Canelo Alvarez.
