Fight Preview (April 19th)

Before Canelo Alvarez and Austin trout do battle Saturday night, there is an intriguing match-up in the afternoon.  That match-up will feature veteran of the ring Steve "USS" Cunningham of Philadelphia and enormous British fighter Tyson Fury.  It will be a bout of slick skills against massive size and potential.

Cunningham is very experienced and has been fighting for thirteen years.  He has campaigned mostly at cruiserweight  and has only two fights in the heavyweight division, one being a close loss on NBC to Tomasz Adamek.  Cunningham is long a slick with the skills of a lighter boxer, his record is 25-5 with only 12 knockouts.  He should use his long reach and quickness to move in and out, not letting the much bigger Fury land any devastating punches.

Landing devastating punches is exactly what Fury will look to do.  Cunningham will be by far the toughest test of his career, and should he win a possibly match-up against a Klitschko brother wouldn't be out of the question.  That is many due to the size of Fury who is 6'9'' and about 260 lbs.  And he fights his size, watching Fury is like watching a third Klitschko brother, albeit one who isn't as polished.  He is also much younger then Cunningham, twelve years so.  Fury's career record is 20-0 with a solid 14 knockouts.  He isn't the quickest fighter by any means so he will need to get Cunningham up against the ropes so he can tee-off on him and scored the knockout.

This fight could really go either way, especially since Cunningham already lost to the bigger Adamek who also posses a ton of power.  But Fury may not be ready for a fighter of Cunningham's pedigree.  This won't be the prettiest fight because Fury is so slow and plodding but if Cunningham can move well in and out he could easily put on a show.  While a Fury knockout is very possible, it would earned.  Cunningham doesn't go down easy and is tough as nails.  If this is a phone booth fight Fury will knock Cunningham out in 10 rounds.  But Cunningham should be able to use his superior speed and skills to outbox Fury all night.

PREDICTION:  Steve Cunningham shows off his boxing skills en route to a unanimous decision.
