Time For A Change

Unlike many of Adrien Broner's recent opponents, Gavin Rees actually came to win, not just survive.  And according to HBO's unofficial ringside judge Harold Lederman, Rees did just that, winning both rounds.  Broner didn't seem to take the fight with Rees as seriously as he should have.  His defense in the first two rounds was not as slick as fans have become accustomed to, and was very over confident.  It looked like Rees might be able to make Broner work for a full 12 rounds.  But fans quickly learned that Broner was too skilled for Rees and the first two rounds were a result of Broner simply being uninterested.

Then came the third round, when Broner decided to turn it up a notch.  Broner caught Rees with a devistating eight punch combination that came fast than a bolt of lightning.  It sent Rees back against the ropes and referee Earl Brown looked as if he would end the fight if another two or three punches were landed.  But Rees somehow weathered the storm, showing a ton of heart that won over many fans in Atlantic City.  In the 4th round things got even worse for Rees.

Broner landed a devastating right uppercut that Rees never saw coming.  That punch sent Rees flying to the canvass, and although he got to his feet to beat the count he was clearly dazed.  Once action resumed Broner was able to land a few more hard shocking punches before the round was complete.  After that lopsided round Gary Lockett who is the trainer for Rees, called the referee over to stop the fight, but Rees knowing this could be the biggest fight of his career, talked Lockett out of it and answered the bell for the 5th round.  And to start the round it was looking as if Rees made the right call.  He came out strong and pressured Broner, landing some solid punches.  Then out of nowhere Broner caught him with a massive left uppercut to the body that took all the wind out or Rees and forced him to take a knee.  Again he beat the count, only to take more punishment.  At that point Lockett and seen enough and threw in the white towell to end the fight.

So once again Broner has a knockout victory against a lesser opponent.  Soon he will have to start asking himself how long he can continue beating up weaker foes, until boxing fans stop careing.  Broner is young, talented, and a hype machine, now he needs to start fighting legit opponents.  Although he is always compared to Floyd Mayweather, fans can also compare him to Manny Pacquiao in certain respects.  The most notable is that Pacquiao never calls people out, he just says he will fight whoever the promoter puts in front of him, and Broner is saying the same thing.  Let's hope his next fight is a more legit one.  If Ricky Burns wins his next bout then a fight between Broner and Burns should be on the table, the winner being the undisputed number one lightweight in the world.  But Broner may need to move up in weight to junior welterweight to make better, more exciting fights.  That division is absolutely loaded with top of the line talent, and Broner would fit in perfectly.
