Friday Night Fights Quick Picks

Carlos Molina vs. Cory Spinks: Tonight on ESPN's Friday Night Fights, fans should be treated to a good matchup between two fighters looking to resurrect their careers.  Both are skilled fighters but also have too many losses on their records.  Molina being 26-5-2 and Spinks at 39-7.  However records can be deceiving.  Molina was beating James Kirkland before his corner man entered the ring too early and he was disqualified.  Also most of his losses came early in his career and against top flight competition such as Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Mike Alvarado.  If Molina were to win this junior middleweight fight, bigger things would be in his near future.  Spinks has also lost to top flight guys such as Zab Judah and Jermain Taylor.  But he also beat Judah in their first fight and also holds a victory over Ricardo Mayorga.  He fights southpaw which always causes problems, but doesn't hit hard.  Neither fighter has much in the power department.  At 34 years old, most view Spinks as a faded fighter in the twilight of his career, and I would have to agree.  Molina is only 29 and still has a lot left to prove, and with his skills, actually has a chance to do it.  I expect Molina to get the victory by pitching a unanimous decision shutuout.

Jose Luis Castillo vs. Antwone Smith: The other fight on tonights card is a battle of youth against age.  Smith is only 26 years old whereas Castillo is 39 and his been fighting professionaly since 1990.  Castillo has fought everyone and anyone during his HOF career.  Those fights inlcude two battles with Floyd Mayweather and Diego Coralles, and fights against Joel Cassamayor and Ricky Hatton.  His record is 64-11-1 with 55 knockouts.  And big time boxing fans are well aware of his first fight against Coralles in which he knocked Coralles down twice in the 10th before being knocked out himself in the very same round.  It is one of the best fights in the history of boxing.  However his last meaningful fight was in 2010 against Alfonso Gomez.  And as we all know, age can catch up to a fighter in the middle of a bout.  But whether Smith posseses enough skill to capatalize on that age is the big question.  His record is an unimpressive 22-4-1.  Having 4 losses at 26 years old is way to many.  And besides Kermit Cintron he has not fought any legit fighters.  And against Cintron he lost a clear decision.  His power is nothing special and even though Castillo is so old, Smith should be in over his head.  I think Castillo will get the knockout victory in the sixth round of a ten round fight.
