Middleweight Showdown

Most big time boxing fans are well aware of the uncertain future surrounding Julio Cesar Chavez Jr..  After his lopsided albiet exciting loss to Sergio Martinez in September 2012 he tested positive for marijuana, and was suspended.  But the question of just how long he will be suspended for remains to be answered.  That decision will come in February when the governing body meets to discuss the matter.

Fans are also aware that whenever Chavez Jr. does make his return to the ring it probably come against reigning middleweight champion Sergio Martinez.  That fight will be a much anticipated rematch and should earn both fighters career paydays.  But the real question is who comes next after that rematch?  Well hopefully the answer is Gennady Golovkin, the epic power puncher from Kazakhstan.

Golovkin has only had two fights in the United States and after his most recent victory against Gabriel Rosado, should be looking for a big name fight to propel himself into the mainstream.  That name should be Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., one of the most loved & hated boxers in the sport.

Both fighters styles fit each other pefectly.  They like to constantly come forward, always pressuring their opponent, and never giving an inch.  Neither fighter has outstanding defense which leaves them open to big punches.  But that doesn't matter so much in the case of Chavez Jr. who has by far the best chin in boxing.  That kid could get hit square on the chin with a baseball bat and not even blink.  Golovkin also seems to have a good chin, although it has not been tested much.  Both men also posses good punching power.

Do not be mistaken however.  Their punching power is packaged in much different forms.  Golovkin's power is of the one punch knockout variety.  Even his jabs look like power punches.  Chavez Jr. has good punching power, but he doesn't usually look to land one big punch.  Instead he wears you down with an enormous amount of body punching throughout a fight.  What would make this fight so amazing would be to see the chin of Chavez Jr. against the power of Golovkin.

Not only would this fight be extremely fan friendly but it might have the chance to go down as an all-time great, with a few rematches thrown in.  Many times two sluggers, or pressure fighters are thrown together but the action isn't as compelling as expected.  But for these two men the fight would without a doubt live up to if not exceed the hype.

So while the future is very cloudy for Chavez Jr. fans should hope for a fight against Golovkin.  But it really all depends on the length of Chavez Jr.'s suspension and if or when he fights Martinez.  If it does happen it probably won't come until late 2013 or early to mid 2014.
