Down Goes Salido, again & again

The fight between Mikey Garcia and Orlando Salido was supposed to be a tough test for Garcia and a possible showcase for Salido.  Instead it was a lopsided fight that was never in question.  From the first round fans saw just how dominant Garcia could be.

In the very first round Garcia dropped Salido two times.  He also sent Salido to the canvass in the third round and again in the fourth round.  The fight lasted eight rounds but it could have just as easily ended after the first one.  Thats how utterly dominant Garcia was.  It was almost as if he was just fighting against his heavy bag in the gym.

Garcia who usually starts very slow and dissects his opponent started very fast.  He did not want to give Salido any opportunity to gain confidence or win a round.  While it was all one sided it was still an exciting fight to watch because Garcia was so masterful.  Unfortunately when the fight ended in the eight round it left a bitter taste in the mouths of everyone involved.

In that eight round Salido had Garcia on the ropes and came in to throw a punch, head first.  He missed the punch but seemed to cup Garcia behind the head and pull his face towards him.  That headbutt, which didn't seem very accidental badly broke Garcia's nose.  It was crooked and he said he had a lot of trouble breathing.  The ringside doctor examined the nose and determined that Garcia could not continue, so the fight would go to the cards.  Those cards came in without any drama, all three judges had Garcia winning by a wide margin.  One judge had it 79-70 while the other two had it 79-69.

That victory gave Garcia his first title.  He won the WBO featherweight title.  However he did not celebrate as most fighters do after winning their first title fight.  After such a dominant performance Garcia wanted to end the fight the right way, either by knockout or unanimous decision.  But because of his broken nose it had to end early.  Although Garcia was clearly dissapointed, he will have many other title fights in the near future.  It is also looking more and more like Garcia will be a reigning champion for a very long time.
