Mini Mayweather

Adrien Broner vs. Antonio DeMarco

The main even of Saturday nights card came when superstar in the making Adrien Broner took on the toughest opponent of his career in the ring warrior that is Antonio DeMarco.  It was Broner's first fight at the lightweight division and some people were asking if DeMarco was to tough of a test for his first matchup in a new division.  Well it is now looking more and more that no opponent is too tough for Broner.  To quote Bull Durham, Broner "announced his presence with authority."  Not only in the lightweight division but also against any fighter in the junior welterweight division.

From the start it seemed as though Broner was just to much for DeMarco.  Within a few punches a red mark started to appear under the right eye of DeMarco, which as boxing fans know, is never a good sign.  Most of the fight took place in the center of the ring and to the delight of big time boxing fans the action was nonstop.  To his credit DeMarco never backed down and never ran from his clearly better opponent.  Broner's defense is impeccable and his punching power is ruthless.  He is like a Floyd Mayweather who punches like a Manny Pacquiao.  Broner landed uppercut after uppercut and seemed to be doing whatever he pleased.  DeMarco had no answer for him and as the rounds wore on his punching power continued to dwindle.  In the 8th round Broner landed a monster left uppercut that sent DeMarco down to a knee.  His corner who had already told him they might stop the fight, mercifully waved the white towell to end his night.  DeMarco whose toughness has never been questioned didn't even argue with his corner.  He knew he was severley outmatched and didn't need to take such punishment without a legitimate chance of winning.

Broner who was already a rising star seemed to kick that door wide open with this win.  He kicked it open and danced right in.  Adrien Broner is a boxing superstar.  After his next fight or two he will no doubt crack the top 10 p4p rankings as he continues to beat up better opposition.  While many compare him to a mini Floyd Mayweather, in the long run Broner could prove to be better.  If not better at least more exciting to watch.  Mayweather relies on the best defense of all-time and great counterpunching.  Broner also has amazing defensive skills but also loves to fight, not a combination fight fans see often.  He doesn't just counterpunch, he comes at his opponents and looks to end every fight early.  This man is must see tv!

Many people love to hate Floyd Mayweather, and Broner is no different.  People see his confidence and trash talking and think he is a cocky punk.  Other fans love him for that fact, he is cocky and he backs it up.  Well on this night Broner had no haters.  In a very classy move Broner walked to the ring with a giant portrait of the late great Emanuel Steward with the letters RIP under it on the back of his robe.  But it didn't end there, Broner also donned a picture of Steward on the back of his trunks on the left leg.  Then during his postfight interview he wore a t-shirt that read "Rest in Peace Emanuel Steward."  Say what you want about Broner but because of that I will forever be a fan.  And it doesn't hurt that he is an outstanding fighter.

It doesn't seem like Broner will stay long in the lightweight division.  Antonio DeMarco was the best of that weightclass and Broner beat him up easily.  A fight with former title holder Ricky Burns (35-2) could be in the near future but after that his prospects in that weightclass are done.  In my opinion we will see Broner start to fight at junior welterweight very quickly.  It is a weightclass loaded with top talent and exciting brawlers.  The top eight ranked fighters in that division are all legit names in the sport and would all make a very interesting and entertaining fight.  At this point the only question that can be asked is if Adrien Broner will ever lose, it sure doesn't look like it.
