Keith Thurman vs. Carlos Quintana

This fight pitted the young and powerful Keith Thurman against the veteran and upset specialist Carlos Quintana.  The veteran fighter needed to come into this fight with a good gameplan if he wanted to survive the thumping Thurman was planning to put on him.  Well, if Quintana did have a gameplan it didn't last long.

In the 1st round Thurman dropped Quintana with a vicious hook to the liver, a punch that would have sent many fighters into early retirement.  From that point on the only gameplan that Quintana would use was to run for his life.  For his part the young Thurman did not get frustrated as many fighters would have.  He stayed the course, didn't get wild, and steadily pursued Quintana.  In the 4th round Thurman unleashed a barrage of power punches that sent Quintana back into the corner.  He continued to land heavy shots and referee Jack Briggs could have easily stopped the fight right then and there.  However Briggs decided the tough veteran Quintana deserved to fight his way out, and he almost did.  Quintana landed a few jabs and worked his way out of the corner, but it didn't last long.  Thurman quickly caught up to him and the punches he threw were merciless.  With Thurman using Quintana as target practice and the veteran fighter out on his feet referee Briggs called the fight, saving Quintana from more unnecessary punishment.

Quintana will probably now spend the rest of his career as a name fighter for younger opponents and appearing on boxing programs such as ESPN's Friday Night Fights.  He has had a good career and has nothing to be ashamed of.  The career of Thurman is in a much different place.  He has fought twice this year on HBO and now finally has a name opponent under his belt.  He is a dangerous puncher that anyone must be very careful against.  After his last victory Thurman called out Floyd Mayweather which everyone saw as foolish, which it was.  After his victory on Saturday night when Max Kellerman asked Thurman who he wants next Thurman replied;  "I'm calling out the world of boxing."  And with his punching power the world of boxing needs to take notice.  Keith "One Time" Thurman is here to stay.
