Taken to School

Vic Darchinyan vs. Luis Orlando Del Valle

When fans packed the arena to see former champion Vic Darchinyan take on hot prospect Luis Orlando Del Valle they expected to see a good, closely contested fight.  Instead what they recieved was a good fight, albeit not a close one.  For most of the ten round battle the outcome was never in question with Darchinyan dominating the action for nearly every round.  In fact Darchinyan took the young Del Valle to school and taught him a lesson in being a clean "dirty" fighter.

Most people were expecting Del Valle to win a close fight with Darchinyan who had come into this bout having lost his two previous fights.  What people weren't expecting was that Darchinyan still had a lot left in the tank.  Darchinyan isn't always the prettiest guy to watch fight, but his style is very effective.  Especially against an opponent like Del Valle with such little professional experience, and a guy who has never fought anyone near the level of former champion Darchinyan.  Throughout the fight Darchinyan bullied Del Valle like an older brother teaching his younger brother a lesson.  Everytime the fighters clinched or traded at close range Darchinyan would be sure to "accidentally" use his head and elbows.  In fact Darchinyan hit Del Valle with his head so often that by the end of the fight Del Valle had a deep gash across his chin that needed stitches to close.  The older fighter outclassed Del Valle for most of the fight, causing analyst Max Kellerman to question whether or not Del Valle's corner should throw in the towell.  Roy Jones Jr. another analyst calling the fight responded by saying Del Valle deserved his chance at a knockout and should finish the fight.

Losing badly on the cards Del Valle needed a miracle and in the 9th round almost got one.  He caught Darchinyan with a vicious left hook that badly hurt him.  It seemed like Darchunyan was out on his feet and another big punch would end his night, unfortunatley for the young Del Valle, he was unable to follow up with another big shot allowing Darchinyan to escape the round.  In the 10th round Darchinyan recovered and continued to outpoint his younger foe.  Although he was dominated for nine rounds Del Valle never gave in and never quit on himself.  He showed a very strong chin and a ton of heart that every boxing fan loves to see in a fighter of any age.  Hopefully this loss didn't take too much out of him and he can continue to rise as a legit prospect.  For Darchinyan the future is much brighter.

Having lost his past two bouts most boxing fans wrote Darchinyan off as a past his prime fighter.  Most thought Del Valle would handle him in a tough fight, instead the opposite happened.  Darchinyan who seemed to be coming to the end of his future HOF career turned everything around in ten rounds.  Instead of a guy who had a few fights left against young fighters looking to step up, Darchinyan is now in line to chase another championship belt.  He has always been a fan friendly brawler inside the ring and after this impressive victory fans will be calling for him to fight again soon.  Who he fights next is still up in the air and will be for sometime, however a rematch with belt holder Nonito Donaire could be possible if Donaire gets past Nishioka on October 13th.  That fight would be great for the fans since both fighters are all action and big punchers.  It also would be a rematch of the 2007 fight in which Donaire knocked out Darchinayn in round five.  Lets hope it's a fight we get to see very soon.
