Snooze Fest

Miguel Vazquez vs. Marvin Quintero

The first fight of the night, which also happened to be the only 12 round title fight on the card, was also the most boring.  The first five rounds were almost unbearable to watch.  I even had a hard time keeping my eyes open as barley any significant punches were thrown.  Often times a fight will start slow for the first few rounds as each fighters sizes up his opponent but this was bordering on ridiculous.

Then in round six the action finally started to pick up.  It was suprising how little action there was considering both fighters hailed from Mexico, a country that usually produces all action fights.  This fight was the experience and game plan of Vazquez against the youth and hunger of Quintero.  At time Vazquez can be very frustrating to watch, he doesn't seem to care about giving the fans a good fight.  All he does seem to care about is keeping his lock tight grip on his lightweight title belt.  At you can't blame a guy for playing it safe to keep a belt, although fans would like to see a lot more action.  Quintero was the fighter who tried to give fans the action they were craving.

Quintero who is a recent college graduate and part time teacher had told reporters that he had promised his father he would achieve two goals in life; to graduate college and be a world champion in boxing.  Having already achieved his first goal he now had his eyes set on his second goal.  He stalked Vazquez all night and landed some big punches.  However Vazquez made it almost impossible to catch being that he danced around the ring all night.  Quintero did his best and landed some big shots but just couldn't seem to put anything together to really hurt Vazquez.  He is young and should be a good fighter in the future.

When the fight mercifully ended boos were raining down from the stands.  Quintero's face looked as if he knew he hadn't done enough to dethrone the champion but HBO's fan poll had Quintero getting nearly 69% of the votes for who won the fight.  But as big time boxing fans know fan opinion doesn't always match up with the judges scores.  When the scores were tallied Vazquez was declared the winner and the boos got even louder.  Although fans do not like watching Vazquez fight, he should be in line for another big fight and should be a guy who holds on to his title for awhile.
