Fight Preview (October 27th) Tripleheader

Luis Carlos Abregu vs. Thomas Dulorme

After another dormant week for boxing fans HBO's Boxing After Dark is back in action.  They will give fans a tripleheader and although it might not be the biggest name fighters the action should be intense.  The headline of the card is a bout between veteran Luis Carlos Abregu and hot prospect Thomas Dulorme.  It will be a 10 round matchup at welterweight.  Besides the fighters in the ring this fight will also pit fans against fans as two rabid boxing countries go head to head.  Abregu will have the support of an ever growing Argentine fan base, while Dulorme will be backed by arguably the most energetic fan base in boxing the Puerto Ricans.  Although I'm sure the English fans of Ricky Hatton and Mexican fans will contest to that fact.  Never the less, this should be a very intriguing fight.

Abregu is steadily building a very impressive record, especially in the knockout department.  His record stands at 33-1 with an astounding 27 knockouts.  That record not only reflects Abregu's talent level but also highlights the fact that most of his fights have come against no name Argentine fighters.  And his only big name fight coming in a loss to Timothy Bradley.  Despite that, Abregu has been in some battles and is obviously extremley heavy handed.  He is a danger to any fighter, especially one as young and inexperienced in professional fights as Thomas Dulorme.

Although only having 16 professional fights to his name, Dulorme amassed a record of 140-2 as an amateur.  Since turning pro Dulorme has been undefeated with a record of 16-0 and 12 knockouts.  However he has not fought any legit fighters outside of his fight against Demarcus "Chop Chop" Corley, who as boxing fans know hasn't been impressive in a very long time.  Dulorme is heavy handed and likes to swarm his opponent earning him the nickname of "La Tormenta" which translates to "The Storm."  This fight against Abregu will certainly be the biggest test of his young and promising career.

While Abregu doesn't have much to gain by fighting such a young foe, Dulorme has nothing to lose.  If he wins the fight he takes a big step forward, and if he loses it shouldn't affect his future too much.  I expect to see to see a slugfest come Saturday night in New York.  Neither fighter will be willing to give an inch and the blood should be painting the canvass all night.

PREDICTION:  Luis Carlos Abregu wins by 10th round knockout.

Miguel Vazquez vs. Marvin Quintero

Also on Saturday night will be a lightweight title fight between Miguel Vazquez and Marvin Quintero.  This fight promises to be very exciting.  It pits Mexican against Mexican which big time boxing fans know should mean a war in the ring.  It seems as if everytime a Mexican fighter steps into a boxing ring it is almost always guaranteed to be a boxing fans dream.  They fight hard, with a ton of heart, and are never willing to give in to their opponent.

Miguel Vazquez is definatley the bigger name fighter of the two.  He is promoted by infamous boxer Antonio Margarito and has had some big name fights under his belt.  His record is a solid 29-3 with 13 of those wins coming from a knockout.  He is an orthodox fighter who at the age of 25 has already fought some very good competition.  In fact his first career fight came against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in a fight he lost, the two men have actually fought twice with Vazquez losing both matches.  Vazquez's only other career loss came against Timothy Bradley in 2007.  Undoubtley his biggest win came against Breidis Prescott who famously knocked out then undefeated Amir Khan.  Vazquez definatley has more experience against big name fighters then his opponent Marvin Quintero which could come into play come Saturday night.

Quintero is also 25 years old but fights in a southpaw stance.  His record is 25-3 with 21 of those wins coming via the knockout.  However in all three of his career loses Quintero has been knocked out, raising question about his chin.  Another knock on Quintero is the opposition he has faced, who have been far from stellar.  But he is an agressive fighter whose power and southpaw fighting stance could prove frustrating for the lighter punching Vazquez.

If Quintero wins it will be his first time as a champion and propel his career to greater heights.  However Vazquez definatley won't be giving up his belt without a fight.  Vazquez is not a big puncher but has been in many brawls and usually leaves the ring, win or loss with his face a bloody mess.  The action should be fast and intense.

PREDICTION:  Miguez Vazquez wins via unanimous decision.  I do think Quintero will badly hurt him at some point in the fight though.

Karim Mayfield vs. Mauricio Herrera

The first fight of the night will put young American prospect Karim Mayfield against Mauricio Herrera.  This fight is all about Mayfield, it will be his first in front of a national audience.  He is known as one of the fastest fighters in the sport and should be exciting to watch.

Mayfield has a record of 16-0-1 with 10 wins coming via knockout.  Although he hasn't had many fights as a professional he does have a big knockout win against Steve Forbes, a fighter who has been in the ring with some of the best in the sport.  Not only is Mayfield lightning quick but he is also a big puncher earning him the nickname "Hard Hitta."  His opponent Mauricio Herrera has never really been in the ring with a true top flight opponent.

Herrera is 18-2 with a decent 7 knockouts.  His biggest fight came in his last bout against Mike Alvarado who boxing fans are well aware of from his fight two weeks ago against Brandon Rios.  Besides Alvarado he has not really fought anyone of note.  Herrera is already 32 years old and with only twenty professional fights he probably won't ever amount to more than a tough fighter for younger foes to test themselves against.

This fight could go either way.  Big time boxing fans could either witness an exciting fast paced fight, or a boring matchup with Mayfield easily controlling the action.  It just seems that Mayfield will be too skilled for Herrera, but hopefully the older fighter makes him dig deep and work hard.

PREDICTION:  Karim Mayfield wins via 7th round knockout.
